Stainless Steel Valve Material Guide: 304 vs 316 vs 316L

Choosing the right stainless steel grade for your valve is one of the most important purchasing decisions you will make. The wrong material fails early, costs downtime, and can compromise an entire pipeline. This guide explains the differences between the most common grades — 304, 316 and 316L — and their cast equivalents CF8, CF8M and CF3M, so you can specify the correct material with confidence.

1. Why the valve body material matters

The valve body is the pressure-containing shell that everything else bolts onto. Its material determines:

3. When to use 304 stainless steel

304 (cast CF8) is the workhorse grade. Choose it for:

4. When to use 316 and 316L

The addition of molybdenum makes 316 far more resistant to chlorides, pitting and many acids. Choose 316/CF8M for:

316L (CF3M) is the low-carbon version. The lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which protects against intergranular corrosion. Use 316L whenever the valve will be welded, or for high-temperature service above roughly 425°C (800°F).

Most industrial valve bodies are castings, so you will usually see foundry grades rather than wrought designations. The key standards are ASTM A351 (for high-temperature castings) and ASTM A995 (duplex). Here is the simple mapping:

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel for valves?
