1. External leakage at the stem or gland

2. Leakage at the flange or body joints
Flange joint leaks are usually due to a wrong or damaged gasket, or uneven bolt tightening. Remedy: match the gasket to the face type, ensure the faces are clean and aligned, and re-tighten the bolts evenly in a star pattern. A leaking body joint may indicate a casting defect and needs professional inspection.
3. Internal leakage — valve won’t shut off
Internal leakage means flow passes through the valve when it is closed. Common causes are a worn or damaged seat, debris trapped on the seat, or erosion. Remedy: flush the valve fully open to dislodge debris. If flow still passes when closed, the seat or the ball/disc must be replaced. Frequent internal leakage is often a sign the valve was oversized or used for throttling when it shouldn’t be.
4. Hard to operate or sticking stem
A valve that is difficult to turn usually has an over-tightened packing gland, corrosion or scale on the stem, or media build-up inside the body. Remedy: loosen the packing slightly, lubricate the stem threads, and operate the valve through its stroke to clear deposits. If the media has solidified inside, the valve may need disassembly and cleaning.
5. Noise, vibration or water hammer
Noise and vibration in valves are often caused by cavitation, high velocity, or fluttering check valve discs. Water hammer occurs when a check valve slams shut on sudden flow reversal. Remedy: reduce velocity, choose a silent or dual-plate check valve for pump discharge, and check that the valve is sized correctly for the flow.
